January 2018 Updates: Settling in a new place

I did a review on my 2017 and state a few goals I would want to focus in 2018 late last year. Some of the goals set are to ensure that I focus on creating healthy habits throughout 2018. I will try to post monthly updates or once every 2 months on my progress to keep myself accountable and to serve as a journal to keep track on everything.

January 2018 has been a roller coaster ride for me. I quit my job mid-December 2017 and started a new job in Singapore earlier this year. The initial plan was to start on 8th January but there are some issues in my working visa application and it dragged all the way to mid-January 2018. I spent most of my time looking for a place, settling working visa, and other administrative stuff.

Though it was pretty hectic, the entire experience was fun and I was pretty excited to start my journey. Starting my career in a new place means I will need to begin adapting all over again. The job here is not exactly chill and I literally work from 8.30 a.m to 9.30pm on average. There are days where work ends as late 1.30 a.m and by the time I reach home, it would be close to 2 a.m. The normal me would be irritated but I started this new job with a different mindset where I would want to learn as much as I can.

Hence, my struggle is not so much on the long hours but on adapting my life to this schedule and still work on things I want to.

By now, you would have guessed that January was more of an adaptive month and to be honest, I am still adapting. I am always convinced that regardless of how busy the day is, I will still be able to squeeze out time if I really want to. Just that it would involve some sacrifice, usually my sleep.

The goals

Here is a quick recap of goals I have set earlier this year. Throughout my entire month, I did some self-reflection and there are goals that I added in which I would also want to work on.

Health & Workout
  • Workout 4 to 5 times a week.
  • Cut down my milk tea intake to 2 times per month.

I started out the year making it a commitment to workout 4 to 5 times a week. My initial plan was to workout every morning before work but sleeping at 2 a.m and waking up at 5.30 a.m just doesn’t seem like a good idea. Despite a busy work week every weekday, I still manage to slip in 4 workouts every week. 

First of all, I make it a must to workout during the weekends and the remaining 2 workout day is squeezed by sacrificing 30 to 45 mins of sleep during the weekdays. There are days I went for a jog at 12 a.m. Literally trying to squeeze in some time to work out.

If you know me well enough, you would have known that I have this addiction for milk tea where I actually drink 4 to 5 cups every week. Hence, I have set a goal to cut down my bubble milk tea intake to 2 cups a month earlier this year. I am proud to say that I have kept my milk tea intake to 2 cups in January which is not that hard. I replaced with healthier options like Boost Juice which is a great drink to kick-start the day.

Self Development
  • Read at least 12 books or 1 book per month. (Self Development)

Throughout January 2018, I have completed a book and started a new book. Most of the time, I spend time reading during my commute to work which is something I appreciate a lot. Back in Malaysia, I drove to work and I would need to focus on driving. But now that I am taking the MRT, I have 30 mins of reading time every morning.

I have completed Breakout Nations this month and I wrote a summary for my own future reference. You can check it out. A pretty good book but it would be more relevant if I have read it earlier. I am now reading The subtle art of not giving a f*ck by Mark Manson.

Books Read in 2018:

  • Breakout Nations (January 2018)
Investment
  • Start Option Trading on Thinkorswim Paper Money account and to start with real money by October 2018. (Investment)
  • Increase my investment allocation in the market to approximately 50% by end of 2018.

To be honest, I have made zero progress in terms of my investment goals. I did not even look into options or even my current investment at all. I will slowly get back into it once I settled in. My initial plan was to spend time after work to look into options and etc. but with my new work schedule, I barely even have time for proper sleep. I am still in the midst of arranging my time and fitting in all this into my all new schedule. By my next updates, I suppose would have made some progress.

Travel
  • Travel to somewhere I have not been before.
  • Visit Amanda in Hong Kong.

I just applied a week of leave early April 2018 and will be planning a trip to either Korea or Japan depending on Amanda. Alternatively, I will be flying over to Hong Kong to visit Amanda.

Side Stuff
  • Start a side project
  • I will publish 1 blog post each week and to increase the traffic to the site.

My goal for Interestingly Awesome is to publish more frequently of at least 1 blog post each week. Not exactly the rate I was expecting but with me still adapting to my new routine, I would say I am okay with the progress. I published a total of 4 posts in January which average out to about 1 each week.

Conclusion

January 2018 has been all about adapting and settling in. I foresee myself getting back on track on my goals soon. In terms of getting the workout I need, I will still stick with my initial goal of getting up 30 to 40 minutes earlier for a quick Freeletics workout. Reading will be done mainly during my commute to work or back from work. That’s about it for my weekdays. I do not intend to cramp my entire weekdays as I know I will not be able to commit. Hence, weekdays will be all about me focussing on my work which happens to be my priority as well, reading, and working out.

And over the weekends is the time where I will work on the remaining stuff which is investment and side stuff. Investment being looking into options and my current portfolio as I am just getting started. My side stuff being the niche side project I just started as well as writing on Interestingly Awesome.

That’s about it. A quick and short updates for January 2018. If you are wondering why am I updating this, it is mainly from the goals I have set earlier this year. I will try to update more frequently so do follow if you are keen.
