Bandung was my first stop in Indonesia before heading to other province in the Java Island. Prior to my arrival in Bandung, I have pre-booked my stay in Pinisi Backpacker Hostel in advance through Agoda which is a great platform for cheap deals. I chose this hostel because it is affordable and has a pretty decent rating from their guests.
I was pretty nervous as that trip to Bandung was my very first trip alone and first time staying in a backpackers hostel. The thought of heading to a new place all alone and staying in a backpackers hostel is definitely overwhelming at first. But the people there are really friendly making me feel like home instantly.
Here’s my review of Pinisi Backpacker Hostel:
Easily accessible (10/10)
From the airport
Pinisi Backpacker is easily accessible to and from the airport. I arrived in Bandung Airport from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and it was easy to get to the hostel. From the airport, walk to the main entrance and flag for an Angkot (one of their public transport). Tell the driver you would want to stop at Istana Plaza. The hostel is located 300 to 400 metres away from Istana Plaza.
From Bandung train station
The train station is just 15 minutes away from Pinisi Backpacker Hostel making it very convenient for backpackers to travel to other province.

Great Location (9/10)
As mentioned in traveling guide in Bandung, most of the major attractions are located away from Bandung city centre. But there are also other attractions around Bandung city centre itself which is located not far from Pinisi Backpacker Hostel. Places like Chihampelas walk, Braga street and etc. are just a taxi bike away which would cost around IDR8,000 (USD0.6 or RM2.70).
Not only that, there are convenience store, food stalls and even a shopping mall which is just a 5 minutes walk away.
Tour Recommendation & great place to meet people (7/10)
Pinisi Backpacker has a day tour options you can opt for. I took the tour down to South Bandung with other backpackers who were there during my stay. A hassle free way of traveling to the major attractions.
From my own perspective, a great tour is contributed by:
- People we travel together
- Affordable price
- Great guide
I do not know if that is the best or most affordable tour package but the price is reasonable, at least to me. The best thing I like about Pinisi is the people we are able to meet in the hostel. They have a free space for backpacker to chill out and have breakfast together. This is where great travel plans are made and travel ideas are exchange. However, I only rate it 7 as the guide is merely a guide that drive you around. They do speak good English though.
Decent Place (8/10)
For a backpacker hostel, the place is a pretty decent. They do have free breakfast every morning with different menu for you to choose from. The hostel also have a social area where backpacker can chill and mingle around which is really good for solo backpacker to look for companion to travel together.
They come with a few options for the room. Depending on your preference, you can opt for room with only fans or rooms with air-conditioner. Also, each bunk bed comes with their own power socket. Everything is clean but there are limited number of toilets. Only two as I can remember.
The only thing which I find slightly negative would be the lockers where the padlock were broken when I was there which raise a question if I should use the padlock provided. But I brought my own padlock so it was not an issue.
Overall the place make you feel like home, like literally. You get what you pay for.
Should you stay in Pinisi Backpacker Hostel?
As the name suggest, the place is a ‘backpacker hostel’ and not a hotel. If you are looking for a hotel with your own privacy, then this is definitely not a place to go to.
However, I would definitely recommend Pinisi Backpacker if you are looking for a backpacker hostel. The place is not only convenient, easily accessible, filled with awesome people, and comes with free breakfast, it is also reasonably priced.
